• 3.0 out of 5 stars from K. Christie -- Nice story, by a step way back on illustrations : I just got this today, opened the box, and read it quickly. I couldn't wait. The story is nice. It didn't "take me there" as much as Hugo or Wonderstruck, but enjoyable. But the illustrations are sparse and rather weak - mostly of kaleidoscope views. No characters. If you're hoping for something like Hugo or Wonderstruck, I wouldn't bother. And it's printed in China so the physical quality is marginal. But you might be satisfied and you'll be supporting Brian Selznick's work if you give it a try. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2021 )

It did take me a few chapters to understand what was going on - so be patient. The wait is worth it. The book chronicles an important friendship of two young boys after one has died. Their friendship transcends time and death. An important reminder that love transforms but still exists even after death. The illustrations are of course gorgeous. The metaphoric themes are very strong and younger readers may needs some help in understanding their importance. Very well written. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2021 )

Several examples to choose from (and I didn't get very far), but in one, a boy genie invites the man to 'squeeze into his cave'...the boy is holding the mans hand and tells him to make a wish, but his first wish is 'already coming true.'
